Eugene B. Sledge in Eugene Bondurant Sledge was born in Mobile on November 4, , to Edward Simmons Sledge and Mary Frank Sturdivant. Sledge's father was a physician with undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. His mother was the daughter of Ellen Rush Sturdivant, the dean of women at Huntingdon College in Montgomery. By the time Sledge hit the hell of Okinawa, he was a combat vet, still filled with fear but no longer with panic. Based on notes Sledge secretly kept in a copy of the New Testament, With the Old Breed captures with utter simplicity and searing honesty the experience of a soldier in the fierce Pacific Theater.

Sledge, shares his recollections from the perilous and triumphant events of World War II, while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.   Sledge finally got his ticket off this hellscape on Octo when his regiment was relieved by Army troops. His unit retreated to a beach area at the rear, where he was finally allowed to clean up. The month-long combat had been a “savage, brutal, inhumane, exhausting, and dirty business” and Sledge certainly looked : Brett And Kate Mckay.

SLEDGE. BOOK THREE. DEVIL'S TRIFECTA MC. I'm a lieutenant for the Devil's Trifecta MC. I protect all in the club. Once I met Sable Quinn and her team, I realized they did the same job, except, they followed the law and I never did. I'm called to help them again the Spencer Security Firm. This time, we need to protect Sable and another woman. The series was excellent, but the book will leave you speechless. It really is a great read. It is written in the simple manner that E. B. Sledge was, no historical this or that, just simply what he observed, felt and experienced during the war. You wont be able to put this one down.5/5(45).

Eugene Sledge's book of his personal experiences as an enlisted man in the US Marine Corps during WW2 is one of the most honest, visceral accounts of close-up infantry combat ever written.

Sledge’s style is not that of a practiced professional writer but is simple, straightforward and direct, and this endows the book with its unusual power/5(K). China Marine is the second book by With The Old Breed At Peleliu And Okinawa being his memoirs from his time being in the marine book is totally different With The Old Breed covers the horrors of being under constant fire on the front line and the daily grind of survival to China Marine as a occupation force in China /5().

This account by E.B. Sledge, a Marine PFC who landed on Peleliu andOkinawa, details the violence and brutality of these two battles sorealistically that it is a disturbing and haunting book. Peleliu wassupposed to last 3 to 4 days, but went on for 2 months and cost theMarines 1, dead and 5, by:   E.

“Sledgehammer” Sledge was born and grew up in Mobile. In late he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. After basic training, he was sent to the Pacific Theater where he fought at Peleliu and Okinawa, two of the fiercest battles of World War II. Following the Japanese surrender, Sledge served in China as part of the occupation force/5().

What separates Sledge’s account of both the battles at Peleliu and Okinawa is precisely the reverse of those aspects of the book which are stereotypical. What is absolutely not a stereotypical aspect of accounts of World War II combat is the visceral description of the reality of war.

32 quotes from Eugene B. Sledge: 'The Japanese fought to win - it was a savage, brutal, inhumane, exhausting and dirty business. Our commanders knew that if we were to win and survive, we must be trained realistically for it whether we liked it or not.

In the post-war years, the U.S. The sledge. book Corps came in for a great deal of undeserved criticism in my opinion, from well-meaning persons who did.

Prompted to read With the Old Breed by watching HBO's The Pacific, I was unprepared for Sledge's unflinching, simple honesty in reporting and processing his WWII experiences as a Marine infantryman. Sledge discusses not only the battles of Peleliu and Okinawa, but the transition from being a sensitive young man to becoming a hardened, battle /5.
